tiki done

February 27, 2009

tikifI did adjust some of the hightlights on the tiki – namely the blue on the shadow side. It seemed too stark and contained, so I erased all that and made it less contrasty and wider. I think it came out pretty well, though there are things I still don’t like all that much… like the mountains.

But, given I only spent about 3 hours on the whole thing, start to finish… I think it came out pretty good.

You can see the bigger version later today on drawergeeks.

tiki update

February 26, 2009

tiki1Started coloring the tiki illustration. I’m not sure I’m liking it too much, but I do like the stark lighting. So, I guess I’ll let things run their course and see what I end up with.

beware the sparky

February 25, 2009

sb_bewareAlso working on the next Sparky strip.

Once again, I don’t really have a good joke, so I’m falling back on a Monty Python joke and spinning it with potential violence… yeah, I know, that’s not very creative or clever… but then neither am I.

However, I did discover that my background sounds don’t fit this one. Which means my overall look keeps changing… but I suppose that’s not really a big deal since I’m just trying to find what I like anyway…

tiki trouble

February 25, 2009

tikiThe next drawergeeks assigment is “Tiki”. I didn’t really know where to go with this…

My original idea was a big tiki head-dress dealy on a female statue, but I couldn’t get anything I liked… so I was re-drawing the tiki helmet and decided to just make it a giant monster.

Since I didn’t have time to do the Giant Monster assignment last year, I figured this would be a good way to make up for it.

Now the big question… what am I gonna do to finish it…

finally, a revised wonder woman…

February 24, 2009

Okay, so this means almost nothing to anybody but me…

Drawergeeks did a Wonder Woman assignment back in ’06 (geez, ’06?). And I never really liked mine much. Scroll down to the middle of the page here and you can see what I did back then.

I always thought this didn’t come out all that great for a number of reasons, among them, the fact that her hair looks like it weighs 30 pounds or something…

tj_wwSo, a friend I work with uses a Wonder Woman image as her IM avatar and I figured that would be a good excuse to do a revised one.

I’m not sure that this one is much improvement, but at least the hair feels lighter.  I do kinda like the sword as well. My original was meant to show the seconds before/after she deflects a bullet with the bracelet… but it pretty much just looks like she’s doing a single bicep body builder pose, so I kinda missed the mark.

This new one has a distinct anime feel to me, for some reason… probably because I was sick in bed when I did it and was watching DVD’s of Gilgamesh and Bleach episodes…

Anime is cool though, right?…

Sparky’s pre-emptive strike

February 22, 2009

So, here it is, the much anticipated second installment of sparky buckweasel… admit it, you couldn’t wait…

I feel like this one is a considerable improvement over the last one in terms of technique and utilization of the frames… which isn’t saying much because the first one kinda stunk…

But, I have to say I feel more comfortable with it this time around and I definitely learn something each time, so I’d have to say things are a success so far.

next week… sparky get’s hit by a bus…or perhaps not. A clever joke would be a nice switch…

Sparky takes a violent turn

February 18, 2009

sb_2I don’t know why, but slapping a dinosaur strikes me as funny… and let’s face it, Sparky looks like a guy who’s prone to violence.

Mostly, I  just wanted to experiment with more movement and emotion to see how that translates to technique and to see if I can simplify the whole thing a bit.

I’m also going to try something I used to do a lot, which is background words and word sounds/sound effects. I always thought it was kinda neat and after I sketched them in last night, I decided I might be on to something… or not, but it’ll be fun to see either way. It might also look really dated, I suppose, but then so is my brain and my talent, so why not go with the flow…

Sparky Buckweasel is born… the symphony of crickets ensues…

February 15, 2009

sb_021509_thumbWell, there’s a lot to improve upon, but it was still a lot of fun and hopefully will keep me motivated to continue working on it. You can see the whole strip here.

It’s funny how when you have a plan to be funny and spontaneous, it pretty much doesn’t work, so I definitely will be working on ways to improve the spontaneity of the images and the jokes, but hey, Charles Schultz had to start somewhere too, right?…

For those who notice that Sparky’s lizard-esque friend looks a bit like Dino from the Flintstones, that’s pretty much true. I used to draw these silly little one-joke dino cartoons all over my notes and sketch books in college, so I figured it would be fun to resurrect that old feller and see where I can go with him. At some point, I suppose I’ll need to give him a name…

I’ll be posting all the links to the strips on my new page: https://timjohnillustration.wordpress.com/sparky-buckweasel/

Thinking about trying a weekly(ish) strip…

February 11, 2009

sb

Well, I’ve got that bug in my head again that tells me it would be cool to try a weekly comic strip…sure why not.

‘Course, this idea hits me about once a year and I typically never get it going, but what they hey, hope springs eternal, right?

So, here we go again. If nothing else it’s a good excuse to draw and practice technique and such. At worst I just never keep it  up and resign myself to abject failure in this area. At best, I actually make some improvement and move on to bigger and better things.

The name is a tricksy issue tho… I originally was gonna use Richard Cabeza… cause that’s just funny. Turns out it’s also not particularly original and is the name of a singer, among other things… So, I’m going to start with my fallback name of  ‘Sparky Buckweasel’. I can always change it later if I come up with a funny play on words… and since it just for my own entertainment, who really cares anyway, right?

If you have a funny name idea, by all means let me know. It’d be swell if the strip had a really hilarious name to make up for the lack of clever jokes or rudimentary drawing skill…

eek, zombie…

dullard zombie

So, I found this old zombie sketch that I never submitted for DrawerGeeks. I should probably put some color to this and send it in. Though, it’s kinda funny as a line drawing, so maybe I just need to do a background or something…
